How is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) different from ordinary oxygen inhalation?

Unlike simply breathing oxygen at a higher concentration, HBOT is a medical treatment in which medical oxygen is breathed inside a pressurized chamber, increasing the amount of oxygen dissolved in plasma. The UHMS defines clinical HBOT as treatment in a hyperbaric chamber under a physician's prescription and supervision, distinguishing it from ordinary oxygen inhalation.

How long does hyperbaric oxygen therapy usually take?

Duration varies with the indication, chamber pressure, and protocol: the UHMS clinical definition generally describes 90–120 minutes at 2.0 ATA or higher, while Cleveland Clinic gives a typical range of 1–2 hours. INEE's current source says 60 minutes, so the website must confirm and state the actual equipment pressure, oxygen concentration, and total treatment time according to the clinic's equipment and medical protocol.

Is HBOT proven to improve recovery after a cosmetic skin procedure?

HBOT has established medical indications such as carbon-monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, certain refractory wounds, and radiation injury, but routine 'recovery enhancement' after cosmetic treatment does not have the same level of evidence. When considered as an adjunct after a cosmetic procedure, the patient's condition and goal should be assessed separately and claims of benefit should not be overstated.

Are there situations in which HBOT may not be suitable?

Untreated pneumothorax is an important contraindication, while some lung diseases, a cold or nasal congestion, fever, and recent ear injury or surgery can increase risks related to pressure changes. Can I take any personal item into a hyperbaric oxygen chamber?

No. Fire safety is critical in an oxygen-rich environment, so electronics, batteries, lighters, certain cosmetics or oils, and some fabrics may be prohibited; follow the safety rules for the specific chamber and medical facility regarding every item you bring inside.

Should international patients consider their flight schedule when receiving HBOT?

Receiving routine HBOT alone does not impose the same flight restriction on every patient, but conditions in which pressure changes matter—such as decompression sickness or pneumothorax—may require separate medical restrictions.
